Department of Internal Affairs (New Zealand)

Department of Internal Affairs (Te Tari Taiwhenua in Maori) is New Zealand's oldest government department. Formed in 1840 as the Colonial Secretary's Office, it gained its present name in 1907.

Presently, major services include:

  • Birth, death and marriage registration and name changes
  • Community development
  • Gaming enforcement and lottery grants
  • Censorship enforcement
  • Citizenship grants and passport issue
