Deo (comic)

Deo is an anthropomorphic web comic created by Grimal, first published September 25, 2002. As of early 2005 the series is in the storyline The Downtown Lights.

Storylines

The story of Deo is a heavily introspective series of stories, whose common theme is emotional pain. Both the stories and characters are heavily interwoven, as the stories tell about the characters while (at the same time) the characters tell their own story. The stories tend to jump around from scene to scene in a seemingly random fashion that can easily confuse readers. The course of Deo is dominated by the principle storyline The Claw. Additional storylines Two Guys on a Plane and The Downtown Lights are unrelated to the other stories, but still feature pain as their theme.

Introductions

Introductions introduces the the principle characters Deo, Laura, Nadia, Mayté and Foncé, as well as their lives and their feelings, building up to The Claw. Deo and Foncé befriend each other while visiting regularly underneath a tree in a city park. Laura has been recently fired from her job by her boss Richard, who is currently dating Mayté, a co-worker of Deo's. This story continues in The Claw.

Two Guys on a Plane

Two Guys on a Plane is a story about two nameless male friends' conversation during an airline flight at night, as they return from an island vacation. One of the men has a sad confession to make. This story is unrelated to the other stories, and does not include Deo as a character.

The Claw

The Claw is a continuation of Introductions, telling the events before and after a single uniting traumatic moment, as seen from the viewpoints of the five characters. Laura narrates the history of her new job at a café after having been fired by Richard. Nadia's book is stolen by an old man who wants to pawn it, and she's desperate to give it back. Mayté ponders about her joyous life of beauty, fashion and life with Richard, only to awake finding herself wrapped in bandages in a hospital gurney. Deo, who is gay, ponders his growing love for Foncé. Foncé cares about Deo likewise, but has trouble dealing with Deo's desire to have a longterm relationship.

The Downtown Lights

Drawn in a more realistic style than earlier stories, The Downtown Lights is about the lives of a gay couple Ger and June at their apartment and office where they work together, and two gay classmates Kiefer and Martin at their college classes. This story has no relationship to the previous stories, and does not include Deo as a character. This story continues as of 2005.
