Degenatron

Degenatron is a fictional games console. It was first mentioned in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City which is set in the 1980s, the time of so-called "Golden age of arcade games". It is described in one of the many humorous radio commercials in Vice City. Just three supposedly "amazing" games are included on the Degenatron.

Games

Defender of the Faith

"Save the green dots with your fantastic flying red square!"

Apparently a side-scroller based on Defender.

Monkey's Paradise

"Swing from green dot to green dot with your red square monkey!" Most likely a Pitfall!-like title

Penetrator

"Smash the green dots deep inside the mysterious red square!".

A game in the style of Tempest.

Notes

The Degenatron is a parody of early 1980's games consoles like the Atari series and the Intellivision. The adverts extoll its graphical capabilities, which appear to stretch from green dots to red squares, but no further.

The console is marketed to disaffected children who resent their parents' suggestions to take up wholesome activities like reading or playing outside. The name "Degenatron" itself parodies those who believe that video games are damaging to childrens' physical fitness, social skills, and morality – the Grand Theft Auto series has been a particular target for accusations of this kind, especially that it glorifies violence. See Video game controversy.

  • "I'll never go to school again!" – a quote from one satisfied customer.
