Daniel (song)
Daniel was a major hit slow rock song by Elton John. It came off the 1973 album, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. It was written by John and his lyricist, Bernie Taupin.
Song
The song's main character, Daniel caused a lot of theories, mostly incorrect. A rumour was created that it was about Taupin's brother. This was wrong, and in the end, people discovered the song was about an entirely fictional Daniel. In an original plan of the song, more lyrics would have revealed more of a past to Daniel.
But some say the mystery surrounding the song made it all the more enjoyable and it quickly reached #2 on the pop charts and #1 on the adult contemporary charts for two weeks in the spring of 1973.
Covers
"Daniel" was covered on the 1991 album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin by Wilson Phillips.
