The Daily Beacon

(Redirected from Daily Beacon)

The Daily Beacon is the editorially independent student newspaper of The University of Tennessee. The paper publishes 16,000 copies a day, five days a week and has a staff of over 100 which includes an editorial team of 14 and more than 60 staff writers.

The Daily Beacon underwent a major restructuring at the beginning of the Spring 2005 semester under the leadership of the editorial team led by Editor-in-Chief Jason Johnson. In addition to design changes to the paper and the accompanying web site, the restructuring brought about the consolidation of several topic-based beats into the more broad categories of news coverage and feature reporting. While news coverage was previously spread among different beats, the new emphasis on feature writing is a dramatic change from the past and has expanded the types of articles and topics the paper will cover.

2005 Restructure

The paper underwent a major restructuring in the Spring 2005 semester. Several beats were consolidated, the layout and typeface of the paper was changed and the web site completely redesigned. The creation of a weekly Features page and the increased emphasis on feature reporting is one of the most obvious changes and gives staff writers the opportunity to gain experience in feature writing — something that was not previously available to the extent it now is.

History

The publication of a student newspaper is one of the oldest traditions at the University, tracing its roots back to the semi-monthly publication of The University Times-Prospectus in 1871. The Orange and White followed in 1906 as a weekly publication and was later published semi-weekly. The Daily Beacon was established 61 years later under the management of alumnus David Hall ('65) and was published four times per week. Not long after, the paper began publishing issues five times a week and continues to do so now, publishing approximately 180 issues per academic year while classes are in session.
