Jabotabek

Jabotabek, or Jabodetabek is the term given to the metropolitan area surrounding Jakarta, Indonesia. The population in 2004 is estimated to be 16.5 million, making it among the ten largest metropolitan areas in the world. It is also the largest metropoloitan area in Indonesia. The area consists of the Jakarta (a province on its own) and the satellite cities of Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi in the province of West Java and Tangerang in Banten.

Demographics

Among the inhabitants, approximately 9 million live in Jakarta, 3.5 million in Bekasi , 3.2 million in Tangerang, and 800,000 in Bogor. The population steadily increases due to migration from all over Indonesia.

The government of Indonesia projects that the population of the Jabotabek region will reach 32 million by 2016. These statistics project Jakarta will grow to 12 million while the other cities will have a combined population of 20 million.
