Cavern Wildlife

The fictional D'ni civilization of the Myst series live deep in an underground cavern with very little in the way of wildlife. There is, however, a plankton which lives in their undergound lake, which provides them with the majority of their light. This light-emitting organism provides light for half of their day, and is dormant for the other half, thus providing a simulation of night and day. Small references are made to salamanders and other species in the Cavern. In Uru, explorers can see a large aquatic creature swimming in the Cavern's lake, and fireflies circling various lanterns in the neighborhood areas.

Wildlife in other Ages

Many of the D'ni's ages display lush wildlife, and a number of creatures and plants are seen in the computer games. Some ages, such as Eder Kemo in Uru and Edanna in Myst III: Exile have huge amounts of wildlife.

Edanna is often called the Life Age. It is a huge inward-growing tree inhabited by hundreds of strange plants and animals. All the puzzles in this Age somehow involve manipulation of the mysterious wildlife. This is also the home of the famous Exile mascot, the Squee. The Squee is a small, white, chipmunk-like animal. It jumps in a manner similar to that of a kangaroo and eats small purple fruits. Barnacle moss inflates large pink balloons upon hearing its soothing chirps.

There is also a lot of wildlife on Riven, the Fifth Age of Gehn, including the Great Wahrk, a giant whale-like creature which eats humans when available. Gehn uses it to threaten the Rivenese villagers. Other wildlife on Riven are the prehistoric-looking Sunners (a large aquatic animal with a bill), numerous birds, bright cave-dwelling frogs called Ytrams and yellow D'ni beetles. These beetles are 'written' into every one of Gehn's Ages because they are used to make ink for the D'ni Art of making linking Books to Ages.
