Cubes of Foundation

The Cubes of Foundation are powerful items in the Zork series of computer games which contain the essence of middle magic. The small white cubes were created when the world was being laid down, and were hidden away with this knowledge.

The plot of the game Spellbreaker revolves around these cubes. Each of them is the basis of a different kind of magic, and they are gathered by the player's character in an effort to determine why magic is failing. At the end of Spellbreaker, all of the cubes are apparently destroyed.

In Zork Grand Inquisitor, however, "The" Cube of Foundation plays an important role. It was won in a game of Double Fanucci by Antharia Jack. The player sends Lucy Flathead back in time to retrieve the cube from him by playing a game of Strip Grue-Fire-Water. The cube, when united with the Skull of Yoruk and the Coconut of Quendor, restores magic to Zork.
