The Song
The single was released, in 2000, as a double A-side along with "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)". "Can't Take That Away" was emphasized at Pop/Top 40 radio stations and "Crybaby" at R&B/Urban radio stations. The single was co-written by Mariah and co-produced by Mariah and Damizza in addition to featuring a rap by Snoop Dogg. The song is built around a sample of the song "Piece Of My Love". The song's message entails the struggles of Mariah dealing with her insomnia and thoughts of past lovers as she "spirals out of control" and declares "I gotta get me some sleeeeeep".
"Crybaby" marked a dark time for Mariah's singles as it was actually intended for the a-side of the single, "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" to chart on the Hot 100, while "Crybaby" would focus on the R&B Charts. Both singles picked up very limited airplay at their targeted stations, and due to the technical aspects of Billboard rules, "Crybaby" having marginally more airplay than "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)", was given permission to chart instead.
Music Video
The music video, considered one of Mariah's finest, correlates directly to the song as it shows Mariah on a restless and insomniac night in her apartment as Snoop Dogg arrives via Mariah's television screen just in time to perform his rapped parts.
Remixes
Although rumors have surfaced of remixes existing of this song, no remixes to date have appeared. There is a radio edit of this song, as the original song staggers in at more than 5 minutes long (but no remixes were made)
The Emancipation of Mimi
Although "Crybaby" was not a successful project for Mariah Carey and Snoop Dogg, Mariah still collaborated with him again on "Say Somethin'", a track on her newest album, The Emancipation of Mimi. Mariah and her bosses are possibly considering releasing this as a single.
