Jedinica za Specijalne Operacije

(Redirected from Crvene Beretke)

Jedinica za Specijalne Operacije (JSO, Unit for Special Operations), was elite special unit of Serbian police. It was part of Resor Drzavne Bezbednosti (RDB, Serbian security service), until members of this unit organised a public protest (November 2001.), after which JSO was removed from competence of RDB.

When Serbian prime minister, Zoran Djindjic was assassinated, in March 2003, some members of this unit were accused of taking part in the assassination (Zvezdan Jovanovic, member of JSO is accused of committing this murder, Milorad Ulemek, Legija, former leader of unit is a prime suspect in this case), and unit was disbanded.

Origin

Unit for Special Operation was formed in 1991, as a top secret formation. Because of its secrecy it had no name, and because of distinctive red berets, it got nickname crvene beretke (red berets). First commander of JSO was Franko Simatovic, and thus second nickname, frenkijevci (Franky's boys).
