Covasna

Covasna (Hungarian: Kovászna, German: Kowasna) is a town in Covasna county, Transylvania, Romania, at an altitude of 550–600 m.

It is known as "town of 1,000 mineral springs". It is an important watering place. Covasna's name is derived from the Slavic word Cvaz, meaning sour, referring to the taste of its mineral waters.

As of 2004, a recent census shows 11,204 inhabitants. About two-thirds of the population are ethnic Hungarians.

History

  • 1567 – First mentioned in a document.
  • 1952 – Covasna became town.
