Copper Copper Sulphate Electrode

Copper Copper Sulphate Electrode is a type of reference electrode, based on the redox reaction with participant of the metal (copper) and its salt – copper(II) sulfate. Corresponding equation can be presented as follow:
Cu2+ + 2e = Cu0(metal)
This reaction characterized by fast electrode kinetics, what means that a sufficiently high currents can be passed through the electrode with the 100% efficiency of the redox reaction (dissolution of the metal or cathodic deposition of the copper-ions).

Dependence of the potential of the copper-copper sulfate electrode on activity of copper-ions:
<math> E=0.337 + \frac{RT}{2F} ln a_{Cu^2+} <math>

Application

  • Reference electrode (saturated solution of copper sulphate) for cathodic protection testing.
  • Copper coulometer
  • Copper-Copper sulfate electrode also used as a one of the half-element in the Daniel-Jakobi galvanic cell.
