Frederick Copleston

Frederick C. Copleston, S.J.

Frederick Charles Copleston, (1907 – 1994) was a Jesuit priest and:

  • Author of an influential nine-volume History of Philosophy
  • Debated Bertrand Russell, in a famous 1948 BBC broadcast, on the existence of God.
  • Also took part in another famous debate, this one with A. J. Ayer on logical positivism and the meaningfulness of religious language


"Even if the actual systems of philosophy which have appeared in the philosophical thought of a given culture are historically conditioned, there may be ways of thought exemplified by past systems which remain a feature of a people's mentality or cultural outlook."
