Main Characters
- Rosette Christopher: One of the main characters of Chrono Crusade. She is an elite exorcist of the Order of Magdalene, and goes out on missions to destroy demons who are causing trouble. She works with a demon named Chrono, and is bound to Chrono by alchemy. Her main goal is to save her brother Joshua, who has been captured by a demon named Aion.
- Chrno / Chrono: Rosette's partner. He is bound to her by alchemy and keeps to himself most of the time. Every now and then, he has to drag Rosette's butt out of danger. He is known as Sinner Chrono by other demons and used to be on the same side as Aion. He has also lost his horns, the source of his power.
- Joshua Christopher: Rosette's little brother. He and Rosette used to live together in an orphange and he was often sick. He found that he had strange powers though, and was able to heal other people's wounds and illnesses, but not his own. He was then captured by Aion, who gave Joshua Chrono's horns. Joshua is now insane because of those horns and is under Aion's power. He is called the Apostle of hope.
- Azmaria Hendric: An Apostle. Azmaria, like Joshua, has found herself with strange powers to heal other people's illnesses and wounds, by singing. She is frequently being chased by those who want her powers especially Aion. She looks up to Rosette so she joins the order of Magdalene to help fight. She is called the Apostle of charity, and because of her strange powers has 'hurt' many of the people around her.
- Aion: A Sinner and a demon. Aion is trying to 'collect' all of the apostles so he can tap into the astral stream, and thus fulfill his dream to destroy Pandaemonium and the 'rebirth' of the world. Aion is actually quite a noble person, but it is the means of accomplishing his dream that makes him a villain. Chrnoo used to be on his side and he has many other followers. He is the one Rosette and her gang are fighting against the most.
- Satella Harvenheit: She hates all demons. Satella is a jewel summoner who is a hired assasin, who kills demons. She lost everyone in her family, except for sister, to demons when she was younger and came to America from Germany to try to find her remaining family. Rosette and Satella don't exactly take a liking to each other when they first meet, especially since Rosette works with Chrono, a demon.

Terminology
Most of the words used in Chrno Crusade sound like those used in Catholicism, but has almost nothing to do with the religion.
- Apostle: A person that is able to call the Astral Line and use its powers. There are seven Apostles, each from a different section of the world. The Apostles can fly using their wings, which appear on their back whenever they need them. They have supernatural powers which is a great help and hindrance for them. Greedy people target the Apostles to extort their powers.
- Astral Line: A river of spiritual energy, invisible for the human eye, that is the source of life of every living being in the universe. The Astral Line is also the energy source for demons, which are channeled by their horns.
- Contract: A pact between a hornless demon and a human. Since the Astral Line is also the source of life of human beings, a demon can take energy from the lifetime of a person wanting to use his powers and pay it back with services.
- Demon: Monsters who are mostly hostile towards humans (Not to be mistaken with the fallen angels of the Bible who rebelled against God). Demons, while appearing hostile, are not completely evil. They are not immortal and they can be either male or female. Demons have their own society, an oppressive community similar to a beehive, where everyone has a rank according to their power level. High-ranking demons (like Chrno and Aion) are similar to humans in intelligence and figure, except that they never grow old, and have extraordinary powers that are based on the energy of the Astral Line. All demons are born from one mother, Pandaemonium, the demon queen.
- Eden: The Sinner's headquarters, a large floating fortress hidden in the clouds.
- Exorcist: A member of the Magdalan Order that fights against demons and monsters.
- Legion: Low ranking demons. They have different shapes and sizes, usually deformed and monstrous, and have very little intelligence.
- The Magdalene Order: A religious organization that specializes in battling all sorts of monsters and investigating mysterious supernatural cases. There are several branches in the United States, but the most influential ones are in New York and Chicago. The Order also has the duty of protecting people blessed with special abilities (like the Apostles) from any evil person who desires to use their powers for their own ambitious purposes. The Magdalene Order is also a powerful, technologically advanced organization, and its members have to undergo a very difficult military training and are sent to all kinds of dangerous missions.
- Minister: A male member of the Magdalene Order. Ministers are able to use all sorts of weapons, but seem to be experts in hand-to-hand combat.
- Nun: A female member of the Magdalene Order. Nuns are able to use different kinds of weapons (mostly firearms) and other types of equipment (like cross- barriers).
- Pandaemonium: ¹The demon queen, mother of all demons. ²The demon society, that is hidden deep under the sea and is named after the queen.
- Pursuer: A demon that is in charge of hunting down the Sinners. All demons from Pandemonium are potential pursuers.
- Sinner: A demon that betrayed Pandemonium, the demon society. There are only 6 of them: Aion, Chrno, Jenai, Rizel, Sheda and Wid.
- Soul: The lifetime of a person. Not to be mistaken with a persons spirit.
