Chongming

Chongming County (崇明县, pinyin: Chóngmíng Xiàn) is the only county under the jurisdiction of Shanghai, China. The county is located on Chongming Island (崇明岛, pinyin: Chóngmíng Dǎo), the second largest island of mainland China, after Hainan. It is a lowlying alluvial island in the mouth of the Yangtze River first emerged above water in 618.

It was the most urban area of Shanghai at one time, but now with the construction the trans-Yangtze tunnel, many people are rushing to the island to look for gold. It is also a major relocation centre for migrants from Three Gorges Dam area. Chongming has an area of 1041.38 km² and population of 694 600 as of 2001.

Chong Ming National Forest Park is also located there.
