Production history

With the 89B tank fast becoming obsolete in the 1930s, Japan choose a design by Mitsubishi as its replacement and began production in 1937.

The Chi-Ha tank was quite well equipped at the beginning of its service life, being armed with the 57mm gun. It was soon outpaced by tanks from other nationalities though.

In 1942 the Shinhoto Chi-Ha was developed as a stop-gap measure by using the longer 47mm turret of the new Type 1 Chi-He.
