Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of
Philip Dormer Stanhope (1694–1773) was an English courtier, statesman, and author (wit and letter writer). Stanhope was the 4th Earl of Chesterfield for whom Chesterfield County, Virginia was named when it was formed in 1749 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly. Chesterfield County, South Carolina was also later named in his honor.
Among the quotations attributed to him are:
