Chanyu

Chanyu(Shanyu is quite an unacceptable corruption) is the title of the ruler of the Huns [Xiongnu in Chinese]. The literal translation is "the greatest" in Xiongnu language. It is roughly equivalent to the Chinese "Son of Heaven", and the succession was in theory hereditary, though it often happened otherwise.
