Chaim Vital
Chaim Vital (1543-1620) was a rabbi and mystic. Living in Safed he was chosen as the closest disciple of the great 16th century kabbalist, Rabbi Isaac Luria (known as the ARI) and became his authentic foremost interpreter.
The ARI's esoteric teachings, were in fact transcribed by Rabbi Chaim Vital. After the death of the ARI, Rabbi Chaim Vital moved to Damascus which had a large Jewish community.
