Scientific instruments are used to register or measure data, and should be distinguished from simple laboratory equipment, tools, and machines which serve to produce an effect. Instruments tend toward being more complex than tools, although this need not be the case. Although instruments may automate some tasks, they require an intelligent agent to direct their function. Versatility distinguishes an instrument from a 'machine' which may have more mechanism, but whose application is more determined.
