Car club

A car club is a group of (usually) young men who share a common interest in tricked-out cars, trucks, SUVs, and/or minivans. Common car club adornments include:

  • Neon lighting on the underside of a car
  • Hydraulic suspension which can be used to make a car "bounce" or tilt in different directions
  • Lowriders
  • Custom detailing, most often flames painted on the hood and sides of the car, and racing stripes
  • Oversized or under-sized wheels and tires
  • Neon signs or painted lettering in the back window
  • Oddly colored, stroboscopic, or stencilled headlights/tail-lights/parking-lights
  • Spoilers
  • Loud mufflers
  • Elaborate stereo systems

More affluent car clubs will hold car shows, while less organized clubs will hold rallies, which often primarily involve cruising a major city street.

Car club members will occasionally race each other, but such an event is rare, as they are usually more interested in enhancing their cars' beauty than in the thrill of speed and the vastly increased possibility of wrecking their life's work.

Car clubs are thought to have begun with American cholo lowrider culture, but have since spread to the more general youth culture. Equivalents in other countries, primarily Italy, Japan, and Korea, may have been influenced by lowriders or may have developed independently.
