Cap-Vert

The peninsula of Cap-Vert (Cape Verde, meaning "Cape Green") is the westernmost part of the continent of Africa. It is a rocky promontory extending west from the main sandy areas of Senegal. The capital of Senegal, the large city of Dakar, is located near the southern tip. Cap-Vert has an excellent harbor, facing Gorée Island.

Cap-Vert was inhabited historically by the Lebou people, a fishing community that still lives on the north coast, at Yoff, near the modern Dakar airport.

The name of the Republic of Cape Verde comes from Cabo Verde which in French is Cap-Vert. The cape and the country were named by the Portuguese as Cabo verde.
