Cal

Cal can mean multiple things:

• Cal is the nickname (short for California) of the University of California, Berkeley, dating from the days when it was the only University of California campus (1868–1927), prior to the creation of UCLA. It is still frequently used for the U.C. Berkeley sports teams.
• Cal is shorthand for referring to the state of California, as with nicknames such as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cal State Long Beach.
• cal is abbreviation of calorie, unit of energy. Used mainly by nutritionists, as scientific measurement adopted the joule in its place.
• cal is a standard progam on Unix that prints an ASCII calendar of the current month or year. See cal (program).
• Cal is one of the short stories in Gold: The Final Science Fiction Collection by Isaac Asimov. The protagonist of the story is a robot of the same name.
• Cal is also a novel by Bernard MacLaverty.
• CAL is an acronymn commonly used to refer to the Cyberathlete Amateur League.
• Cal is a shortened form of the given name Calvin.
• CAL was a JOSS-like programming language.
• Cal is an alternative designation of the Caló language.
