Boundaries
The constituency was first created for the general election of 1997, when Caithness and Sutherland was abolished and its area was combined with an Easter Ross area of the constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West. During much of its life the Caithness and Sutherland constituency combined the areas of the administrative counties of Caithness and Sutherland, but, in Scotland, administrative counties were themselves abolished in 1975. The Easter Ross area is in the east of what was the area of the administrative county of Ross and Cromarty.
Ross, Skye and Inverness West survived as a neighbouring constituency until the general election of 2005, when it too was abolished. Most of it became part of the new consituency of Ross, Skye and Lochaber. Some of it enlarged the Easter Ross component of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.
Na h-Eileanan an Iar and Orkney and Shetland are also nearby constituencies. The name Na h-Eileanan an Iar is taken from Gaelic: prior to the 2005 general election the same constituency, with the same boundaries, was known as the Western Isles.
