CHUM Limited
CHUM Limited is a publicly traded media corporation based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It currently has control over eight independent television stations, and 18 branded specialty television channels. In addition, CHUM controls 30 radio stations across Canada.
CHUM began in 1945 with a single AM radio station in Toronto. In 1954 it was purchased by Allan Waters, and today several of his children stand on the board of directors of the company. In 1967 Waters founded CHUM Limited to control his growing number of media properties.
Although CHUM's radio holdings tend to retain traditional formats, their television stations reflect the avant garde philosophy of former senior executive Moses Znaimer, who turned his hip, local style of television broadcasting into an image as perhaps Canada's most flamboyantly visible media titan in the 1980s and 1990s. (Znaimer retired from active management at CHUM in 2003, although he continues to work on projects with the company.)
CHUM Limited's headquarters are located at 299 Queen St. W. in Toronto, the famous CHUM-City Building.
On December 1, 2004, CHUM purchased Craig Media Inc. for $265 million (CAD). In the deal, CHUM acquired Craig's three A-Channel stations (CKAL in Calgary, Alberta, CKEM in Edmonton, Alberta, and CHMI in Winnipeg, Manitoba), CBC-affiliate CKX in Brandon, Manitoba, and the digital specialty channels MTV Canada, MTV2 and TV Land. The transaction, announced by CHUM on April 12 of that year, was approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on November 19. The A-Channel stations will be rebranded CityTV for the fall season of 2005.
Because CHUM already owns two TV stations in the Greater Toronto Area (CITY in Toronto and CKVR in Barrie), it was announced on August 20, 2004 that Craig's Toronto One could not be owned by CHUM and was sold to TVA and Sun Media the day after the purchase of Craig Media, on December 2, 2004, for the purchase price of $46 million (CAD) and Sun's 29.9% share in the Toronto news station CablePulse24, which is now wholly owned by CHUM.
