Browser-based
- This article or section should be merged with web application.
In computing, browser-based software is written in HTML, Java/JavaScript, or Macromedia Flash so as to be used by one's Internet web browser application (as opposed to a self-contained binary).
As a consequence of the direct connection with the browser, some option settings of the browser may also apply to the browser-based software.
The positive aspects include a quicker development time and less restrictions on platform specifications (as HTML is a cross-platform language), the ability to access web-based information easier, and the freedom to perform web-like behavior without an Internet connection. The negative aspects include less control in the actual features and ability of the software.
Conversely many Enterprise class software systems use a standard browser to access administration consoles and for general input and output functions. In these cases the software is not browser based in the sense of executing on the client machine, but is still dependent on the browser for all input and output functions. This is sometime referred to as a Web-based interface and is used by systems such a Cisco, Autonomy and Artesia.
