OODA Loop

(Redirected from Boyd cycle)

The OODA Loop is a concept originated by military strategist Col. John Boyd (USAF). It consists of four overlapping and interacting processes:

  • Observation
  • Orientation
  • Decision
  • Action

It is also known as the decision cycle, Boyd cycle or the OODA cycle. It has become an important concept in business and military strategy. According to John Boyd, decision making occurs in a cycle of observe-orient-decide-act. An organization which can process this cycle quickly can get inside the opponent's decision cycle and gain a military or business advantage.

Boyd considered the orientation part of the cycle to be of great importance. It's not simply "where am I?" but understanding the "cultural traditions, genetic heritage, analyses and synthesis, previous experience, and new information" that influence both you and your opponent. Orientation is a worldview which influences decision making processes. By understanding how it influences your opponent, you can make choices that will be difficult for them to respond to.
