Burgas Airport

(Redirected from Bourgas Airport)

Burgas International Airport, also known as Sarafovo Airport, is the airport of Burgas, Bulgaria. The IATA airport code of Burgas Airport is BOJ, its ICAO airport code is LBBG. The airport was used as a U.S. Army airbase during the Operation Enduring Freedom and although it is rumoured to become a permanent U.S. airbase but heavy passenger traffic of tourists going to the Black Sea resorts near Burgas is likely to prevent this. The airport is with a seasonal schedule and is not operating during the winter time when most of the resorts in the area are closed.

Future plans and expansion

Together with Varna Airport, the Sarafovo Airport is subject to heavy traffic following the booming tourist industry in Bulgaria and needs to expand and modernize in order to handle projected passenger traffic. In April, 2005 the Bulgarian Government awarded Copenhagen Airports A/S a 35 year long concession on both airports in return of investments exceeding €500 million.
