Robert Patrick Casey, Jr.
Robert Patrick Casey, Jr. (born April 13, 1960 in Scranton, Pennsylvania) also known as Bob Casey, Jr. or simply Bob Casey, is an American politician who belongs to the Democratic Party. He is currently State Treasurer of Pennsylvania, having assumed that office in January, 2005, after winning more votes in the November 2004 election than any other candidate for statewide office in Pennsylvania history. He previously served as State Auditor General from 1997 to 2005.
Casey is the son of the late Robert P. Casey, the 41st Governor of Pennsylvania, and ran for the office himself in 2002. He lost the Democratic primary to Ed Rendell, who went on to win the election. On March 5, 2005, he announced he would seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2006 to face Senator Rick Santorum in the general election. He was endorsed by Rendell and by Joe Hoeffel, the Democratic candidate for the state's other Senate seat in 2004. Polls released in April 2005 gave Casey a fourteen-point lead over Santorum. [1]
Casey, like his father, is a devout Catholic and opposes abortion. However, he has drawn fire from some Catholics over his support of capital punishment, which his father opposed.
