Bas Balkissoon

Bas Balkissoon is a Toronto city councillor representing one of the two Scarborough—Rouge River wards. Born in Trinidad and Tobago he rose to prominence as the head of Scarborough Homeowners Alliance For Fair Taxes. In 1988 he ran for Scarborough city council Ward 13 and won against four other community activists winning by only 24 votes. With the formation of the new city of Toronto he was elected to the Toronto city council in 1997. He is considered one of the most fiscally conservative members of the council and was an ally of mayor Mel Lastman. As chair of the audit committee it was he who first uncovered what would become the Toronto Computer Leasing Inquiry.
