Barra MacNeils

The Barra MacNeils are a Canadian musical group, consisting of siblings Sheumas, Kyle, Stewart and Lucy MacNeil.

The MacNeil siblings, from Cape Breton Island, began performing together in 1980, when they were still teenagers (and, in fact, Lucy MacNeil was at this point only 10); consequently, they were only able to perform on weekends, and to tour during school holidays.

In 1986, they released their first album on their own independent label.

In 1992, their third album, TimeFrame, won Album of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards, and the MacNeils were named Band of the Year. Consequently, they signed with Polygram, and their first two albums were re-released.

In 1993, their album Closer To Paradise earned a gold record, and they began opening for Céline Dion.

Since then, they have regularly toured Canada and Europe.
