Bao'an

Bao'an (Wade-Giles: Pao An) was formerly a county in China's northwest Shaanxi province (WG: Shensi).

Bao'an bears historical significance as a result of having temporarily served as the capital of Communist-controlled China in the midst of that country's period of upheaval, in which Communist forces battled the Republic of China regime under the Chinese Nationalists (Kuomintang/Guomindang). From early July 1936 to January 1937 Bao'an was the site of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Central Committee headquarters, as well as that of the Communist military forces.

In 1937 Bao'an was replaced in both roles by Yan'an (WG: Yenan), the most significant and renowned Chinese Communist outpost, which served as communist capital until 1947.

Bao'an County is now known as Zhidan County after Liu Zhidan, military strategist and high-ranking leader of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army who died fighting for the Communist side in 1935.
