Baal (Stargate)

In the science fiction television show Stargate SG-1, Baal is a Goa'uld on whom the Baal of mythology was based. During Season 8, he is one of the primary antagonists of the show.

Ba'al is first seen in the two part episode in season five, "Summit/Last Stand", where he is portrayed as one of the System Lords at the time. When Osiris appears on behalf of Anubis to petition the System Lords to accept him back – on the condition that Anubis will, in turn, destroy the Tauri – Ba'al is one of the System Lords that supports the petition.

Anubis subsequently failed in his attempts to destroy the Tauri and moves against the other System Lords, demonstrating an impressively powerful fleet which only the combined fleet of the System Lords could hope to take on. When Lord Yu demonstrated an inability to lead the combined fleets, Ba'al assumed control of the fleets and led the war against Anubis.

After Anubis's fleet was destroyed by the Ancients' Antarctic outpost, Ba'al took over control of Anubis's armies and technology, including Asgard teleportation etc., and waged war against all the other System Lords. This led the other Goa'uld into a failed negotiation with the Tauri which would have lead to the Tauri's support against Ba'al had it succeeded.

Ba'al's advance against the other System Lords was stopped only by the replicators, recent arrivals into the galaxy. Ba'al's forces are occupied by the fleets of ships which fall under control of the replicators, and by the return of Anubis, previously thought to have been killed; during the events of the episode "Reckoning" Ba'al is shown to be serving Anubis, presumably unwillingly. When knowledge of an Ancient superweapon capable of destroying all life in the galaxy is discovered, Ba'al secretly assists Samantha Carter and Jacob Carter in modifying the weapon, along with the DHD associated with Dakara's stargate (device), to destroy all of the Replicators in the galaxy.

Anubis is not pleased with these actions, and decrees that he shall claim the superweapon for himself and that he has been betrayed by Ba'al. Anubis is presumed to have kept Ba'al alive; Ba'al's fate is unknown.
