Auron

Auron in battle

Auron is a playable character in the Square RPG Final Fantasy X. Known in the world of Spira as the Legendary Guardian on account of him being the only guardian to survive the process of defeating the behemoth Sin, Auron has become a blunt, terse and self-shielded guardian who knows more about the pilgrimage than he lets on to his fellow travellers. It is assumed he resided in the city of Zanarkand during a period of ten years following his successful pilgrimage, in which he watched over Tidus as a promise to his friend Jecht. He also promised his deceased lord Braska that he would guard the summoner's daughter Yuna if ever she followed in his footsteps. So, along with Tidus, Auron rode Sin to Spira to commence his second pilgrimage.

As a young man, Auron was a Warrior Monk of Bevelle until he was discarded for refusing the hand of the priest's daughter. He possibly agreed to join Braska because he saw the passion of a fellow victim of the clergy's hypocrisy.

His sword, though called a Katana, is not thin like its Japanese counterpart, and is in fact bulky enough to be compared to a Zanbatou. Auron looks the part of the archetypal Japanese ronin, adopting the style after his lord Braska fell defeating Sin. Ronins slung their arms in their sleeves as an indicator of their masterless position. On his right hip, he carries a Tokkuri decanter, presumably containing sake (though the word 'Nog', possibly a fictional Spiran liqueur, appears on the container). One would imagine Auron drinks the alcoholic beverage in aid of escaping his troubled past, though the fluid is used aggressively in his Overdrive maneuver 'Banishing Blade'.

Auron acts primarily as a window into the past and acts as a guide for the game's protagonist Tidus and thus, the player. At certain critical points in the story, his directness and experience help to hold the group together at the expense of appearing crass and insensitive.

During a devastating assault on the city of Zanarkand, Auron informs Tidus that the assailant is a beast that he once called Sin. Tidus and Auron are separated inside Sin's vortex and the guardian doesn't return to the story until the player reaches the city of Luca.

It becomes increasingly obvious that Auron is running from his past and the spiral of death that encompasses it. He seems obsessed with Yuna sending the fallen and 'allowing the dead to rest'. This is because he himself was killed by Yunalesca (a twist unveiled in the Zanarkand ruins) and lingers in the world as an unsent (those who have transcended death), unable to rest until he has fulfilled his promises to Braska and Jecht.

At the game's finale, Yuna sends the aeons and Yu Yevon, but begins to send Auron inadvertently. However, the guardian pleads for her to continue, having 'played at life too long', and goes to the Farplane to rest at last.

In Kingdom Hearts II

Due to his popularity, Nomura added Auron in his Kingdom Hearts II project.

As far as demo had it, Hades summoned Auron fight Sora for him. However, Auron refused to obey and helped Sora fight Hades and Cerberus.
