Armstrong Atlantic State University
Armstrong Atlantic State University, sometimes abbreviated AASU, is a state university located in Savannah, Georgia. It is a unit of the University System of Georgia and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The university was founded in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College, and was originally housed in a historic building adjacent to Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah. In 1967, the college moved to its current location on the south side of Savannah, near the residential area of Windsor Forest. It began to offer four-year degree programs and was renamed Armstrong State College.
It was designated a university by the Georgia Board of Regents in 1996 and its name was later changed from Armstrong State University to Armstrong Atlantic State University. Recent expansion of the campus has included the construction of dormitories, academic buildings, and a sports center.
Today the university offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs in a number of areas. Many degrees awarded by Armstrong Atlantic State University are in the field of education. In the humanities, it has well-regarded bachelor's and master's programs in history.
The campus is located on Abercorn Expressway South, and is accessible to downtown Savannah via the city bus system, Chatham Area Transit (CAT). Armstrong Atlantic State University's enrollment now stands at more than 6,000 students and 250 full-time faculty.
