Aparna Sen

Aparna Sen (born October 25, 1945 in Calcutta) is one of India's celebrated film directors. In 1961, she began her career as an actress in Satyajit Ray's Two Daughters, while still a student at Presidency College. In 1981, she made her directorial debut with 36 Chowringhee Lane, which she wrote herself. The film won the Grand Prix (The Golden Eagle) at the Manila International Film Festival. In 1986, she was honoured by the President of India with the prestigious Padmashree Award in recognition of her contribution to cinema. Since then, she has received many lifetime achievements awards, sat on juries at festivals around the world and continues to make award-winning films.
