Aomori (青森市; Aomori-shi) is the capital city of Aomori Prefecture (青森県; Aomori-ken).
As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 296,139 and a density of 427.71 persons per km². The total area is 692.39 km².

The city was founded on April 1, 1898.
Memorial to soldiers who died crossing Hakkoda Mountains
The Hakkoda Mountains lie in the southern part of Aomori. In 1902, more than 200 soldiers died while trying to cross the Hakkoda Mountains during a military exercise.
