AlpTransit
AlpTransit is a Swiss project aimed to build the longest rail tunnel in the world beneath the Swiss Alps. The project consists in two different sites:
- The Gotthard axis, with the new base tunnels at Gotthard, Zimmerberg and Ceneri. It is being done under contract from the Swiss Federal Government by AlpTransit Gotthard Company. With a planned length of 57 km, it will be the longest railway tunnel in the world upon completion.
- The Lötschberg axis. It is being done by the AlpTransit Lötschberg Company.
The Swiss population accepted the project by vote the 27th of September 1992.
