Alfred C. Gimson

Alfred Charles Gimson (7 June 1917 – 22 April 1985) was an English phonetician.

He became a professor at London's University College London in 1966 and was head of its Department of Phonetics and Linguistics as from 1971.

Gimson was a scholar of Daniel Jones, and as such extended Jones' theories on Phonetics.

Gimson's Introduction to the Pronunciation of English, first published in 1962, is still accepted as the standard description of Received Pronunciation.
