Abu Iyad

Abu Iyad(Arabic أبو إياد) (? – January 14, 1991)(born Salah Khalaf (Arabic صلاح خلف)) was Palestine Liberation Organization deputy chief and intelligence chief, and at the time of his death was considered the second most senior official of Fatah after Yassir Arafat. He and Abu Hul were assassinated in 1991 by an Abu Nidal operative, in Tunis.

Abu Iyad, also known as Salah Khalaf, is widely recognized as the head of the Black September group which was held responsible for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games massacre, and for the cold-blooded kidnapping and killing of two U.S. diplomats in Sudan the following year.

Abu Iyad was assassinated in an inter-Palestinian feud in 1979.

To honor this Palestinian "Hero", a sports center funded by the U.S. and USAID in the West Bank town of Fara'a was named after him (Salah Khalaf).
