2UNE-FM
2UNE is one of Australia's oldest student radio stations. It has a colourful history of broadcasting, both legally and illegally, to the campus of the University of New England and the community of Armidale, NSW. The station broadcasts on 106.9 MHz. It began operating in 1970 as Radio UNE on 1630 kHz. The station is run by the UNE Students Association and is operated by mostly volunteer staff.
Radio UNE was the brainchild of Professor Neville Fletcher of the UNE Physics Department who successfully lobbied the Australian government for a limited licence. The licence allowed the station to operate a 'closed-loop' system with micro-transmitters located in each of the eight residential colleges on campus. The system was unique in Australia but similar to a number of campus stations in the US. The station was opened on 27 April, 1970 by the then Vice Chancellor, Professor Zelman Cowen. Richard "Swinging Dick" Mutton, Station Manager, introduced the first music track, Nilsson's Everybody's Talking.
