• May 4 – Milwaukee Art Museum, designed by Santiago Calatrava opened.
• June 28 – Gehry Tower in Hanover, Germany, designed by Frank Gehry opened.
• September 11 – World Trade Center in New York is destroyed and The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia is heavily damaged by hijacked airliners. (See September 11, 2001 attacks)
