• May 17 – George VI and Queen Elizabeth begin the first ever royal tour of Canada.
• September 10 – WWII: Canada declares war on Germany, two weeks after Britain does so
• September 16 – WWII: The Canadian Navy excorts the first of many transatlantic convoys
• September 28 – WWII: Air training facilities are set up in Canada to train pilots from Britain and the rest of the Commonwealth.
• October 25 – The 1939 Quebec election is won by the Liberals under Joseph-Adélard Godbout.
• December 17 – WWII: The first Canadian division lands in Scotland
• November 9 – Adélard Godbout becomes premier of Quebec for the second time, replacing Maurice Duplessis
